Getting the most out of every day

Our software decides in real time when to charge, discharge or hold.

The problem

Fixed strategies leave a battery’s potential untapped

No industrial site stays constant. Load patterns shift, on-site generation changes and electricity prices fluctuate. Fixed operating logic ignores these changes.

Static control

  • Fixed charging and discharging times
  • One use case always takes priority
  • No adjustment to changing load profiles or prices

Reactive rather than predictive control

  • The battery only reacts to the current load
  • Expected peak load windows are not taken into account
  • No strategic preparation for price peaks

The result: the battery delivers isolated gains instead of actively making economic decisions. Potential goes unused and the payback period lengthens.

FION control

Continuous optimisation instead of a one-off set-up

We continuously adapt how your battery operates: data-driven, automatic and geared to the best possible economics.

The key question

Is it more economical to discharge now or wait?

The decision is not based on fixed assumptions but on your actual load profiles, current market prices and reliable forecasts.

  • State of charge
  • Power price
  • Solar forecast
  • Grid connection point
  • Constraints

Detect and reduce load peaks

The software continuously monitors the energy flows on site. When a load peak is likely, the battery discharges selectively, reducing capacity charges and grid fees.

Make smart use of power prices

Current electricity prices, tariff logic and grid fees are factored in continuously. The battery charges when prices are low and avoids buying expensive power.

Make the most of your own solar power

Forecasts of consumption and solar generation help store surplus energy and use it later on site.

Re-evaluate continuously

At short intervals, the software reassesses all the information and decides optimally whether the battery should charge, discharge or wait.

This lets the battery adapt, based on data, to whichever use is most economical at any time.

Multi-use

Multi-use instead of single use

FION’s AI software does not run your battery statically. It actively manages up to five use cases at the same time to generate the highest economic return.

Peak shaving

Industrial plants often cause short load peaks. Through the capacity charge (a fee per kW of peak demand), these peaks determine a large share of their grid fees. With peak shaving, the battery charges at normal load, is charged and ready before expected peaks and discharges during the peak. This lowers the measured grid draw and reduces the capacity-based grid fee components.

Atypical grid usage

Under § 19(2) StromNEV (the German Electricity Network Charges Ordinance), companies can receive reduced grid fees if they shift their load outside the peak load windows defined by the grid operator. We support this technically: the battery shaves load peaks in these windows and shifts loads in a targeted way without affecting production. Depending on the set-up, this can lead to significantly lower grid fees.

Self-consumption optimisation

Generation and consumption often happen at different times. We therefore increase the self-consumption rate by storing surplus energy from solar PV or CHP (combined heat and power) plants and using it when grid power is expensive. Interactions with peak shaving and atypical grid usage are also taken into account, so more on-site generation is used directly in production instead of flowing into the grid.

Dynamic tariffs

With spot-price or time-of-use (ToU) tariffs, the battery exploits price differences: it charges when prices are low or on-site generation is high, and discharges in expensive periods. The FION software optimises the charging and discharging times based on the tariff structure and on load and generation forecasts to maximise the economic benefit.

Arbitrage

Arbitrage means actively trading a flexible battery on power and balancing markets. Through an energy trader or direct marketer, the battery is deployed, for example, on the spot, day-ahead and intraday markets and on selected balancing markets. It is dispatched when prices are high or supply is scarce, which generates additional revenue.

The highest return does not come from a single effect. It comes from intelligently combining several uses.

For you

What this means for your team

With FION optimisation, you do not need an in-house team of specialists. The complexity stays in the software, you see the results in real time and you benefit from better economics:

Your team has access to a dashboard with metrics such as:

  • Power peaks avoided
  • Higher self-consumption rate
  • Reduced grid fees
  • Payback progress
FION dashboard: live energy flows, savings, grid metrics and battery operation

No laborious monitoring

The battery runs automatically. Your team has nothing to monitor.

No strategy changes

We optimise operation continuously based on prices, load and generation.

No complexity

Market logic, forecasts and optimisation run entirely in the software.

No specialist needed

Easy to use via the dashboard. No expert knowledge required.

If anything changes on site, we automatically adapt parameters, forecasts and battery operation to the new conditions.
